Rugby TUSC statement on determination of local public sector workers to help out in treacherous weat

“The Rugby Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) is committed to defending public services, and was therefore pleased to learn that Rugby Borough Council has re-scheduled its bin collections for the days it was impossible to collect them because of ice and snow on Monday and Tuesday. Workers should not have to work in unsafe conditions unless there is an emergency, but residents need their bins regularly collected. Hence we agree with these sensible arrangements. Similarly, schools had to be closed for safety reasons, both in terms of children getting there and staff who may have to travel long distances. Whilst we should all be pleased that Warwickshire County Council cleared all bus and major routes in Rugby very quickly, it is disappointing local and more minor roads were not included. We hope this wasn’t to save money. Rugby TUSC continues to oppose all cuts to public services, and is grateful to council workers who have kept most services running in these unusual weather conditions”
